一般的にC.P.O.と呼ばれるこのシャツは『チーフ・ペティ・オフィサー』の略で米海軍では曹長を意味している。即ち、曹長クラスの身分の者が選ぶことの出来るブルーフランネルシャツを意味している。曹長達の公の場でのレギュレーションはブラックタイを着用し、ネイビートラウザ−にタックインするスタイルであった。ライトウェイトの圧縮ウール製C.P.O.シャツは、海水や雨にされされても体内が冷えにくいという機能を備えていた。米海軍に於いての標準採用は不明だが、1930年代にはチンストラップの付いたタイプも存在した。このC.P.O.シャツには両ポケットの型やフラップの形状の違いなど幾つかのバリエーションが存在している。今回リプロダクトに踏み切ったのは左胸のみのポケットで、そのフラップの形状はウィングを切っており、最もシンプルで洗練されたC.P.O.であることがその理由である。
This shirt is commonly known as a C.P.O., short for ‘Chief Petty Officer', a rank in the US Navy. In other words, it refers to the blue flannel shirt available to personnel of Chief Petty Officer rank. The official dress code for Chief Petty Officers in public settings was to wear a black tie, with the shirt tucked into navy trousers. Made from lightweight compressed wool, the C.P.O. shirt was designed to prevent the wearer from becoming chilled, even when exposed to seawater or rain. Whilst it is unclear whether it was officially adopted as standard issue by the US Navy, versions featuring a chin strap were in existence by the 1930s. There are several variations of this C.P.O. shirt, including differences in the design of the two pockets and the shape of the flaps. The reason we have chosen to reproduce this particular version is that it features a single pocket on the left chest, with a wing-shaped flap, making it the simplest and most refined C.P.O. shirt.
