タイプB-15シリーズの流れを汲んで1950年代に登場したMA-1は、1978年代まで生産された。同時期に開発された世界中のフライトジャケットの中で最も完成度が高く、最も多くのパイロットによって使用されたのもMA-1である。通算約30年にも渡って使用されたMA-1は、ジェット戦闘機の発達と共に進化を遂げてきた。その改訂は、1stモデルのスペックMIL-J-8279に始まり、MIL-J-8279Fまで計7回もの改良が重ねられた。このMIL-J-8279EタイプはMA-1の第6番目として登場したモデルで、その特徴は、非常時に緊急脱出をする際に地上にパラシュート降下し、味方から発見され易いように考案されたリバーシブル仕様である。そのため裏地の色は森林などでも目立つためようにレスキューオレンジカラーが採用されている。それまで背裏に付けられていたラベルは、リバーシブル仕様となったことでスラッシュポケットの中に移動される。
The Type MA-1 jacket appeared in the 1950s, following in the footsteps of the Type B-15 series, and had been produced until 1978. The MA-1 was the most highly perfected of all the flight jackets developed during the same period and was also worn by the most pilots. Used for a total of about 30 years, the MA-1 has evolved along with the development of jet fighters. The revibegan with the 1st model spec MIL-J-8279 and continued through MIL-J-8279F, with a total of seven updates. This MIL-J-8279E type was the sixth model of the MA-1, characterized by the reversible construction, of which bright-colored lining makes it easier to be spotted by allies after pilots parachuted to the ground in an emergency escape. Therefore, the lining is colored in rescue orange to stand out even in deep forest cover. After the MA-1 became reversible, the label that had previously been attached around neck was moved to inside of the slash pocket.
