USAAF Flying Fortress Heavy Bomber Heaven Sent was assigned September 2, 1944 to the 350th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 100th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 8th U. S. Army Air Force, England. Completed 53 combat missions over Europe, then returned to the USA May 30, 1945. The Crew of Captain Thomas Anderson was the final crew to fly in Heaven Sent. All crew members of the Anderson crew had their A-2 Flying Jackets painted by the Top Turret Gunner/Flight Engineer, Staff Sergeant Micahel Garemko. He was a talented artist and painted the A-2 in May 1945 as a souvenir of the crews combat days together, shortly before the crew was sent back to the USA at the end of the war in Europe. This specific A-2 Jacket belonged to 1st Lieutenant Fred H. Schmidt, the bombardier on the Anderson crew. Fred Schmidt only wore this jacket a few times, then it was very carefully and lovingly stored for many decades, thus the condition of this A-2 Jacket is nearly the same as it was when it was last worn in 1945, making it an extremely rare and valuable piece of tangible 8th Air Force history. The jacket has been preserved in the Museum of the Mighty 8th Air Force, Savannah, Georgia, USA. The Anderson crew completed 30 combat missions together, which are depicted as painted bombs on the back of each A-2 Jacket. The beautiful blonde-haired girl depicted on the back was copied from one of the popular paintings of the WWII era created by the famous pinup artist, Mr. Alberto Varga. The 100th Bombardment Group was known as the Century Bombers and The Bloody Hundredth, and on the right breast is painted the insignia of the 8th Air Force and the words Century Bombers. Also seen on this A-2 Jacket are the red star of the Stalins USSR and the Fascista of Mussolinis fascist Italy; these two national insignias represent special shuttle missions.
