太番手の糸を用いたレーヨンオックスフォード地のツアージャケットに施された刺繍はアメリカ海兵隊の第3海兵遠征軍に所属する兵士が当時、個人レベルで製作したスペシャルオーダーものである。第3海兵遠征軍は太平洋地域で不測の事態に対応すべく、米国の国家安全保障を支援するため1942年に設立された歴史ある部隊。この部隊の基地は沖縄のキャンプ・コートニーにあるため、当時は沖縄の米軍基地周辺に構える刺繍店で製作された。右袖にはこれまで乗艦した兵員輸送艦や攻撃輸送艦、背面には航海した先々の地域が所狭しと刺繍され、着用者の兵士がどれ程の激務を遂行してきたかを表している。兵士が遺体袋を担ぎながら、『もう二度と味わいたくない神の地獄穴』と、戦争と任務を皮肉った兵士のやるせない思いがこの一着から伝わってくる。
The embroidery on this tour jacket, made of rayon oxford fabric woven with thick yarn, was a special order made at the individual soldier level by a member of the U.S. Marine Corps’ 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force. Established in 1942 to support U.S. national security and respond to emergencies in the Pacific, the unit was based at Camp Courtney, Okinawa. The embroidery was produced at local shops near U.S. bases in Okinawa at the time. The right sleeve features the names of personnel transport and attack transport ships the soldier served on, while the back is densely embroidered with the regions sailed through, reflecting the intense service of the wearer. Carrying body bags, the soldier ironically called the experience “GOD‘S HELL HOLE, NEVER AGAIN.” This jacket conveys the soldier’s bitter feelings about war and duty.
