Introduced in the mid-1960s, the M-65 was the culmination of nearly 30 years of research and trial-and-error since the U.S. military first set out to develop a field jacket. It is no exaggeration to call it the ultimate field jacket, packed with the wisdom and ingenuity gained through that long process. The M-65 saw combat during the Vietnam War, where it proved its worth. Soldiers customized these jackets, which had weathered the hardships of battle alongside them, in their own unique ways—adding unit patches or embroidering maps of Vietnam, the site of fierce combat. Some soldiers with artistic talent even hand-painted them, transforming the simple, understated military uniform into a vibrant jacket. The back of this jacket features a powerful depiction of an Army soldier racing in a tank. The art of Ed Roth, a master and artist who helped build the custom car culture in the United States, was all the rage in the U.S. during the Vietnam War era.
