米陸軍フィールドジャケットの代表的存在である通称タンカース。狭い車内で行動する戦車兵のため、その外観は一切の装飾を廃した簡素なジャケットとなっている。ヨーロッパ戦線では、冬期装備の不足により機甲部隊だけではなくフライトジャケットとしても使用されていたが、1943年に多用途の戦闘服であるM-43フィールドジャケットが採用され、ウインターコンバットジャケットは限定採用となった。 アウターシェルは耐水・耐風を意識した打ち込みの良いコットンツイルで、ライナーは26オンスのウールブランケットを使用している。脇や袖は巻き縫いの2本針仕様で、背面の両サイドにはプリーツが設けられ、腕の動きを妨げないようにしてある。タンカースにはパッチポケットとスラッシュポケットの2種類存在しているが、パッチポケットのタイプが前期型である。手縫いで付けられた第2機甲部隊章と2等軍曹の階級章がこのジャケットの存在感をより際立たせている。
The winter combat jacket, which is commonly known as “Tankers”, was originally developed as part of the winter combat uniform for armored division. On the European front it was used not only by armored units, but also by pilots due to the shortage of winter equipment. In 1943, when the M1943 field jacket, a versatile was adopted, and the tankers jacket came into limited use. The cotton twill outer shell has water and wind resistant finish. The 26oz wool was used for the inner lining, and the sides and sleeves are sewn with double-needle lap seams. In addition, the back sides are pleated to ease movement of arms. The jacket comes in two type, one with patch pockets, which is generally considered as the earlier model, and the other with welt pockets.
