通称M-42パーカーは、米陸軍が1942年に採用したリバーシブルのオーバーコートである。通常の野戦では迷彩効果の高いオリーブドラブ側で着用するが、山間部の雪中時においてはスノーホワイト側で着用した。リバーシブルが故に生地は総二枚張りで、着丈が長くフードも付いていることから生地をふんだんに使用した贅沢なコートである。フードの付いた前立てを最上部まで閉じると顔の半分まで覆い、防風、防寒を意識した仕様となっている。オリーブサイドの身頃には左右にハンドウォーマーを兼ね備えるスラッシュポケットとフラップ付きで大型のパッチポケットが装備されているが、着用機会が多くないホワイトサイドはプレーンな状態となっている。ウエストにはフィット感を高めるベルトが付属し、裾の下部に付いたスナップボタンは股の下で前後に閉じると、風の侵入を防ぎ、保温性を高める効果が得られる。フード付きのオーバーコートで基本型を確立したM-42パーカーは、後のM-47パーカーに継承されて行った。
The M-42 parka, as it is commonly known, is a reversible overcoat adopted by the US Army in 1942. In normal field battles, the olive drab side was worn for its high camouflage effect, but under snowy mountain conditions, it was worn on the white side facing out. Because it is reversible, the fabric is fully lined with two layers of fabric, and because it is long and has a hood, it is a luxurious coat that uses a lot of fabric. The hooded placket can be closed to the top to cover half of the face for protection from wind and cold. The olive side has slash pockets with hand warmers on both sides and large patch pockets with flaps, while the white side, which is not often worn, is plain. A belt is attached to the waist for a better fit, and the snap buttons at the bottom of the hem close back and forth under the inseam to prevent wind from entering and increase warmth. The M-42 parka, which established the basic model for a hooded overcoat, was later succeeded by the M-47 parka.
