1950年代中期、防空用要撃機としてノースロップ社が開発した機体がF-89スコーピオンである。そのテスト機のプロモーション用として撮影された写真の中に、非常に興味深いジャケットを着たパイロットが2人立っていた。赤いシェルに黒いリブを奢ったそのジャケットは、MA-1系フライトジャケットに相違は無く、写真のキャプション自体もその内容を示していた。当時、莫大な国家予算を握っていた空軍が最も力を入れていたのが防空用要撃機であった事を考えると、何とか次期主力要撃機の座を射止めようとするノースロップ社の意気込みがこのジャケットからも感じ取る事が出来る。その史実からその真紅のジャケットはコマーシャル用として関係者のみに数着だけ用意された非常に希少性の高いジャケットである。
In the mid-1950s, Northrop developed the F-89 Scorpion as an air defense interceptor. Among promotional photos of the test aircraft, two pilots stood out wearing very interesting jackets. These jackets featured red shells with black ribbing, unmistakably MA-1 style flight jackets, as confirmed by the photo captions. Considering that the Air Force, controlling a massive national budget at the time, focused heavily on air defense interceptors, the enthusiasm of Northrop to secure the next generation’s primary interceptor is clearly reflected in these jackets. Historically, these crimson jackets were extremely rare, prepared only in limited quantities for commercial use and exclusive to those involved.
