AL-1は、BUAER(海軍航空局）が1940年代後半から1950年代前半に掛けて採用した冬季用のフライトジャケットで、AW-1フードと合わせて着用する設計となっている。表地は高密度で織り上げたコットンのコーマツイルが使用され、しなやかで且つ防風性にも優れた素材。ライニングは身頃にアルパカモヘアウールパイルを使用し、袖に滑りの良いレーヨンウールを用いて、更にその中には保温材としてウールフランネルが縫い込まれている。フロントはジッパーとボタンとで二重で留める防寒性を高めた仕様で、インナーにはポケットが左右にあり、左身頃側はジッパー付きでフロントジッパーを閉めた状態でも使用可能で、ライニングのウエスト部にはフィット感を高めるアジャスターストラップが設置されている。また、スラッシュポケットには外気を遮断するリブが内蔵されており、他のジャケットには見られない珍しい仕様を持つ。またAL-1には袖口にリブが内蔵されたタイプとジッパーカフのタイプがあり、コントラクターに依って相違点が見られる。一着のジャケットを構成する上で多くの素材を投入し、凝りに凝った仕様から海軍航空局がこのジャケットに対して如何にエネルギーを費やしたのか、その情熱を痛感せずにはいられない。

The AL-1 is a winter flight jacket adopted by the BUAER (Bureau of Aeronautics) from the late 1940s to early 1950s, designed to be worn together with the AW-1 hood. The outer fabric is a high-density cotton combed twill, which is supple yet highly wind-resistant. The body lining uses alpaca mohair wool pile, while the sleeves are lined with smooth rayon wool, and inside that, wool flannel is sewn in as insulation. The front features a double closure system with both zipper and buttons for enhanced cold protection. Inside, there are pockets on both sides; the left inner pocket has a zipper and can be used even when the front zipper is closed. An adjustable strap is installed at the waist inside the lining for improved fit. Additionally, the slash pockets incorporate internal ribbing to block outside air—a rare feature not seen on other jackets. The AL-1 comes in two variations: one with ribbed cuffs and another with zippered cuffs, depending on the contractor. The extensive use of diverse materials and intricate design clearly shows the Navy’s deep commitment and passion invested in this jacket.
