AERO MEDICAL LABORATORY(航空医学研究所）は、パイロットが任務をより効率良く機能的に遂行出来ることを目的として常に研究が進められている。ある一 定の期間に限定したパイロット達を対象に改良の余地があるかどうかなどのアンケートをとる。そのアンケートの意見を分析し、要望を統合して試作品が作られる。その 試作品には、“テストサンプル” のラベルが縫い付けられ、アンケートに答えたパイロットに支給される。彼らはそれを試用し、与えられた用紙に再び記入し、航空医学研究所に返却する。その返却されたサンプルを分析し、正式にスペックが制定される。開発は常に急務であることと、正式なスペック制定以前という環境から、量産型の支給品とは相違点が見受けられる。量産型のL-2Aに装備されるオキシジェンホースクリップタブは杉綾織のナイロンテープだが、L-2の名残を受けてレザータブが使用されている。ライニングの素材も異なり、通常はナイロン・ウールだがこのジャケットにはレーヨン・ウールの二重織り素材が使用されている。また、装着されているリブとファスナーテープの色はブロンズ色で、テストサンプルらしい特別なオーラを放っている。そしてテストサンプルは試作品のため、左肩にエアフォースマークのデカールが転写されることは無かった。
The AERO MEDICAL LABORATORY continuously conducts research with the goal of enabling pilots to perform their duties more efficiently and effectively. Surveys are conducted among a select group of pilots over a specific period to identify areas for improvement. The feedback from these surveys is analyzed, and requests are consolidated to create prototypes. These prototypes are labeled “Test Sample” and issued to the pilots who responded to the survey. They test the suits, fill out the provided forms again, and return them to the Aero Medical Laboratory. The returned samples are analyzed, and official specifications are established. Due to the urgent nature of development and the fact that this stage precedes the formal establishment of specifications, differences can be observed compared to the mass-produced version. While the oxygen hose clip tab on the mass-produced L-2A is made of twill-woven nylon tape, this jacket uses a leather tab, a remnant of the L-2 design. The lining material also differs; while typically made of nylon and wool, this jacket uses a double-woven rayon-wool fabric. Additionally, the ribbing and zipper tape are bronze-colored, giving the jacket a distinctive aura befitting a test sample. Furthermore, as this was a test sample, an Air Force insignia decal was never applied to the left shoulder.
