タイプB-15シリーズの流れを汲んで1950年代に登場したMA-1は、1978年まで生産された。同時期に開発された世界中のフライトジャケットの中で最も完成度が高く、最も多くのパイロットによって使用されたのもMA-1である。通算約30年にも渡って使用されたMA-1は、ジェット戦闘機の発達と共に進化を遂げてきた。その改訂は、1stモデルのスペックMIL-J-8279に始まり、MIL-J-8279Fまで計7回もの改良が重ねられた。このMIL-J-8279DタイプはMA-1の第5番目として登場したモデルで、その特徴は、非常時に緊急脱出をする際に地上にパラシュート降下し、味方から発見され易いように考案されたリバーシブル仕様である。そのため裏地の色は森林などでも目立つためようにレスキューオレンジカラーが採用されている。それまで背裏に付けられていたラベルは、リバーシブル仕様となったことでスラッシュポケットの中に移動される。
The MA-1, which emerged in the 1950s as a successor to the B-15 series, remained in production until the 1970s. Among all flight jackets developed worldwide during that period, the MA-1 was the most refined and the one used by the greatest number of pilots. Used for a total of approximately 30 years, the MA-1 evolved alongside the development of jet fighters. Its revisions began with the specifications of the first model, MIL-J-8279, and underwent a total of seven improvements, culminating in MIL-J-8279F. This MIL-J-8279D model was the fifth iteration of the MA-1. Its defining feature is a reversible design conceived to make the wearer more easily spotted by friendly forces during emergency parachute jumps. For this reason, the lining uses a rescue orange color to ensure visibility even in forested areas. The label, which had previously been attached to the back, was moved to the slash pocket due to the reversible design.
