The N-2B is a heavy-zone jacket adopted by the U.S. Air Force in the mid-1950s. Heavy-zone jackets are designed for use in temperatures ranging from -10°C to -30°C. A distinctive feature of the N-2 series is its large hood, which allows it to be worn over a hard helmet. This hood is equipped with a zipper in the center and is designed to be split into two sections and draped down the back during flight to avoid hindering movement. Like the N-3 series, the hood is trimmed with coyote fur. While the lining of the earlier N-2 and N-2A models used sheepskin, this N-2B model switched to acrylic fleece. The front, which features a wind flap, opens and closes with a zipper and is further secured with a buttoned flap to completely block out wind. The side pockets have through-style openings so that the wearer can reach the pockets of any inner layers worn underneath. As a waist-length jacket, it allows for easy movement, and since both the outer shell and the wool pile padding are constructed with raglan sleeves, its mobility ranks among the best in flight jackets.
