空母レキシントンは1943年に就役し、太平洋戦争に参戦。終戦後に一時退役したが、1950年代はじめに近代化改修を受けて攻撃空母として復帰、1962年には対潜水艦戦闘を主な任務とする対潜空母となった。レキシントンは1956年6月から12月までの半年間、第7艦隊として第一航空任務 (AIR TASK GROUP) と共に西太平洋に配備された。このジャケットは、その極東航海の際に空母レキシントンは横須賀へ寄港し、兵士の一人が刺繍店で特別にオーダーしたものである。フロントにはオーダーした米兵のマーティがオレゴン州レドモンド地域出身であることが見て取れる。 背面にレイアウトされたトキイロコンドルとエイトボール、スコップは今となっては不明だが、オーダーした彼のみぞ知るデザインで、謎に包まれたジャケットに興味をかきたてられる。
The aircraft carrier Lexington was commissioned in 1943 and saw action in the Pacific War. Although she was temporarily decommissioned after the war, she underwent modernization in the early 1950s and returned to service as an attack carrier; in 1962, she became an anti-submarine carrier with anti-submarine warfare as her primary mission. From June to December 1956, the Lexington was deployed to the Western Pacific as part of the 7th Fleet alongside the First Air Task Group. This jacket was specially ordered by one of the sailors at an embroidery shop during the aircraft carrier Lexington’s port call in Yokosuka on that Far East voyage. The front reveals that the soldier who ordered it, Marty, was from the Redmond area of Oregon. The design on the back—featuring a golden condor, an eight-ball, and a shovel— is now unclear; only Marty, who ordered it, knows the meaning behind it, adding to the intrigue of this mysterious jacket.
